How Event Pros Can Stay Ahead of Big Trends

Kim SayatovicIf you work in the event industry, chances are that you are very familiar with the current trends, as most of your clients will probably be asking for them. Whether you are all about what is “in” or you have grown tired of the latest trends, it is important to be prepared for any requests that come your way.

Although you may be well past the latest floral trend, most of your clients will find it new and innovative. With that said, there is always a way to take a trend and spin it in unique and customizable ways that capture the feel a client is looking for. Here are some great ways to stay ahead of the trends without conforming to the "same old, same old."

1.Utilize Pinterest carefully
When Pinterest was originally launched, it became an instant game-changer for trends. The visual medium is still touted as one of the best ways to garner inspiration for anything from events to home design to hairstyles, so I would be remiss if I did not include it in this roundup. With that said, it is important to remember that Pinterest trends tend to become oversaturated rather quickly. Use Pinterest for ideas, but it is always wise to look for ways to transform a look into something that is uniquely yours.

2.Go shopping
When you are out shopping, keep an eye out for what kinds of things you are seeing in stores.
Are there certain elements you are seeing in home decor shops? Is there a favorite dress silhouette that is popping up in windows? Go in with a discerning mind-set for details that pop out to you--colors, textures and shapes are all things to keep an eye out for as you are browsing the aisles. Of course, browsing catalogues and shopping online are great alternatives if you cannot get to the mall!

3.Follow the runway
High-low skirts, flowy sleeves and revealing backs all got their start on the runway. In general, wedding fashion is often preceded by the designs that we see during fashion week so following fashion designers’ newest styles can give you an idea of what will be trendy in upcoming weddings.

4.Don’t be afraid to ask
Who knows what millennials love more than millennials? Do not hesitate to ask your trend-seeking clients what they are seeing and what they are looking for in an event, as it may give you insight into the up and coming trends in the market.

If you are the type who does not like to give in to what is “in,” keep in mind that there is always a way to take a trend and transform it into a unique design. Creativity is your friend, so keep it close and embrace your own take on today’s latest styles.
