ISES Charts New Course at CPD 2000

ISES established a new presentation style for its CSEP course, created new working relationships for its committees and announced a new management company at the 2000 Conference for Professional Development, Aug. 5-8 in Tucson, Ariz.

BIG TIME IN SMALL TOWN A total of 307 event professionals attended. "We consider this a huge success, as this was the first time CPD has been held in a non-chapter city," said Brenda Shannon, vice president of Los Angeles-based Synaxis Meetings and Events and member of the ISES international communications committee. The 1999 CPD, in Washington, drew 387.

The education track offered seminars in event management, business management and leadership. In a first this year, the CSEP preparatory track was presented in a one-day series of sessions. Speakers included Betty Garrett, CSEP, Garrett Hospitality Group, Columbus, Ohio, on working with corporations; Rob Hulsmeyer, CSEP, and Jaclyn Bernstein, Empire Force Events, New York, on special event logistics; and Teresa Day, Legendary Events, Atlanta, on new buffet concepts.

At the Esprit Awards gala Aug. 6, Tim Lundy, CSEP, Distinctive Design Events, Atlanta, received the first Klaus Inkamp Award, honoring the memory of the special event leader. (For more details on the Esprit Awards, see eventworld, pages 18a-h.)

COMMITTEE CHANGES ISES leadership announced the realignment of several committees, with the communications and marketing committees combining and the certification and education committees working together more closely.

At the annual business meeting, ISES leaders announced the association will change management companies from Indianapolis-based Raybourn Group to Chicago-based Smith, Bucklin & Associates, the world's largest association management firm.

"We wanted to ensure that we are consistently working toward our mission of educating, advancing and promoting the special events industry and those professionals working and collaborating in this industry every day," said incoming ISES president Robert Sivek, CSEP, The Meetinghouse Companies, Elmhurst, Ill.

CPD 2001 will be held Aug. 15-21 in Indianapolis.
