Sequoia Productions, which will produce the Governors Ball for the 27th consecutive year, shows off ball design from years past.
Jeffrey Kurland, veteran costume designer and Oscar nominee for "Bullets Over Broadway," shares his inspiration for this year's motif--caricatures of stars in the style of the legendary Al Hirschfeld.
Here, Kurland notes the role of caricatures in such restaurant landmarks as New York's Sardi's and Hollywood's The Brown Derby.
Sequoia Productions founder Cheryl Cecchetto points to the wall of 170 original-commissioned caricatures of Hollywood stars--including both legends and this year's nominees.
Mark Held of Mark's Garden shows off the array of white blooms that will be featured at the event.
“This year, we designed arrangements that are simple and elegant in crisp white with occasional accents of pink to reflect the style of the drawings and decor that are an integral part of the ball’s decor,” he said.
“Arrangements are set in a variety of rectangular glass and ceramic containers; some with angular pink painted designs. In addition, some will incorporate light globes in copper tone vessels,” he noted.
Thousands of flowers will be specially flown in from Holland, South America and Mexico at the last minute, ensuring the freshest flowers available. Held expects to use more than 10,000 blooms for the all-white arrangements, which include calla lilies, gardenias, ranunculus, Phalaenopsis orchids and succulents.
In addition, the serving staff at the Governors Ball will wear a new variety of dusty pink carnations as a tribute to the period portrayed in the Al Hirschfeld caricatures.

Venerable French champagne house Piper-Heidsieck will premiere three of of its most prestigious vintage cuvees during the Governors Ball.

Mark Friedland Couture Communications custom-designed Oscar envelope is hand-crafted from a high-gloss, iridescent metallic paper, treated in an “Oscar” gold, complemented by a red-lacquered lining featuring the Oscar statuette hand-stamped in satin gold leaf.
A faint statuette watermarked pattern gives the exterior envelope its distinctive finish and provides for added security against duplication.
The exterior of the envelope and its flap features an art deco-inspired satin gold foil-treated frame with an ecru inset panel bearing the name of the award category—each in a richly appointed charcoal ink.
The envelope will contain a heavyweight ecru card with iridescent gold accents and gold leaf-embossed Oscar statuette, along with the phrase, “And the Oscar goes to…"
For a cohesive and elegant look, the names of the winners will be printed in the same charcoal ink and mounted onto a matching, red-lacquered hand-wrapped frame, while the back of the card will be printed with the award category.
