Hot Off the Presses

Destination DC (DDC), the official destination marketing organization for Washington, DC, provided an update on the citywide outlook for 2022 and the organization’s convention sales and services strategies to attract meetings and conventions to Washington, DC. Washington, DC begins the new year by welcoming two citywide conventions at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Modern Language Association’s Annual Convention is Jan. 6-9, followed by Transportation Research Board’s annual meeting from Jan. 9-12. The estimated economic impact is $18.4 million across the two conventions. In total, DC anticipates 20 citywides in 2022 with 390,086 room nights. The Convention Center has implemented numerous mitigation strategies and was recently honored by Exhibitor Magazine as one of the best convention centers in America, in part for prioritizing health and safety protocols. Currently, masks are required indoors and customers must provide proof of vaccination at most indoor locations starting Jan. 15, 2022.

Emmy winning broadcaster Karin M. Reed and Meetings Scientist Joseph A. Allen PhD. Co-authors of the 2021 bestselling book, Suddenly Virtual: Making Remote Meetings Work, have done it again with their upcoming book, Suddenly Hybrid: Managing The Modern Meeting (Wiley, release date: February 2nd)). As 2020’s virtual meetings have given way to hybrid meetings, with some team members in the room and others Zooming in virtually from different locations, new challenges and new opportunities present themselves. In a virtual meeting everyone is in the same situation, using one communication network – their computer screen. Hybrid meetings involve multiple communication networks: in-person conference room, computer screen, phone, etc.. these different ways of being part of a meeting can be challenging for the meeting leader to manage all those different streams. On the flipside, it’s also challenging for meeting attendees who may have a hard time connecting or getting a word in edgewise. We know that it is inherently difficult to manage, or be a part of a successful and productive hybrid meeting, which, in 2022, is the new type of meeting that will only grow in popularity as hybrid work models continue to be the new normal for so many companies and organizations.
