In the wake of the COVID crisis, event companies and industry alliances are developing safety protocols, both to reassure potential attendees and to prompt local governments to relax restrictions on events.

The “MeetSafe” guidelines from the PSAV family of companies were developed with four key areas of focus in mind: event design, room layout/traffic flow, technology enhancements, and cleaning guidelines. With input from venue partners, event planners and leading industry associations, the new guidelines include a series of meeting formats, technology solutions, and other recommendations that outline paths around how the event industry could reopen during the early phases of recovery. “Event Safety and Security in the Context of COVID-19” is an extensive set of guidelines developed by a team including Germany’s Research Institute for Exhibition and Live-communication (RIFEL), ILEA’s Europe Chapter, and big event producer VOK DAMS. The project was overseen by doctors with specialties in infectious diseases, hygiene and environmental medicine; topics covered include staffing, venue design, room layouts, and programming. The “Safe Stay” guidelines from the American Hotel and Lodging Association cover topics including lodging employee and guest health, employee responsibilities, cleaning products and protocols, and physical distancing. They were developed by leaders representing all segments of the hotel industry, in conjunction with public health experts to advance best practices for protecting against the coronavirus. “This initiative represents a new level of focus and transparency for an industry already built on cleanliness,” AHLA says. The U.S. Travel Association has issued “Travel in the New Normal,” a set of health-focused guidelines for travel businesses help customers and employees stay safe. The guidelines cover six main areas, including modifying operations, implementing “touchless” solutions where practical, sanitation procedures and health screenings. Download the guidelines here.
