Who’s News in Special Events for April 30, 2020

Special events business news this week includes the passing of event industry leader Julia Rutherford Silvers.

Jerad Bachar has been named president and CEO of Visit Pittsburgh.

Event industry author, lecturer and designer Julia Rutherford Silvers, CSEP, has died. She is best known for her groundbreaking Event Management Body of Knowledge, a free, collaborative online resource aimed at compiling and analyzing the processes and skills critical to professional event management. ILEA has announced that its 2020 ILEA Live conference, slated for July 27-29, will be presented as a virtual event. An in-person conference is scheduled for Summer 2021.

The Events Industry Council has announced the appointment of the APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force, an inclusive body that will work to develop recommendations, guidelines and resources needed to support the industry’s recovery globally. The task force will be led by co-chairs Michael Dominguez, president and CEO, Associated Luxury Hotels International, and Kristin Horstman, senior director of strategic events for Salesforce. The full task force membership, representing multiple segments across the events industry, will be announced later, EIC said.

Karen Bolinger has been named managing director in the Asia Pacific region by PCMA.

The Global Meetings Industry Day Goes Virtual team has partnered with the University of Westminster to research how companies and freelancers will adapt their business models post-coronavirus. Data will be kept anonymous, and participants can receive a copy of the findings. Learn more here.

Spectra, provider of venue management to the Owensboro [Ky.] Convention Center, has announced promotions and new members at its Owensboro team. Cody Thomas has been promoted to senior event manager/interim director of events. Mary Midkiff and Brett Shaw have joined the team as event managers, while Emma Fitzgerald takes on the role of event coordinator.

Two conferences produced by Informa, parent company of Special Events Magazine and The Special Event, have been honored by the Events Industry Council for meeting its new Sustainable Event Standards at the Platinum level. The conferences are Informa Connect's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo and Informa Markets' Natural Products Expo East.
