Who’s News in Special Events for Jan. 4, 2018

Special events business news this week includes a new MICE director at NYC and Co. and a new owner for Albuquerque Tents.

NYC and Co. has announced that Watson Li has joined the organization as regional director of international MICE, serving the Asia Pacific, Africa and Middle East regions. In his new role, he will drive meetings, incentive, conventions and exhibitions business to New York City’s five boroughs from these markets.

Albuquerque Tents, a full-service rental company serving New Mexico and North Texas, has acquired the assets of Classic Party Rentals’ Albuquerque location. Albuquerque Tents president David Ortiz said, “We look forward to taking care of Classic clients and employees.” Classic’s owner, Mike Bjornstad of Sonoma, Calif.-based Bright Event Rentals, explained, “Albuquerque was not a good geographic fit with our business. We thought it would be best to sell the business before committing the resources we are allocating to other locations. David Ortiz and his team were best suited to fulfill the needs of Classic clients moving forward.” Bright is listed as No. 1 on the latest Special Events “30 Top Rental Companies.”

Catering expert Melissa Darpino has been named brand ambassador for Los Angeles-based Vintage Grocers.

Peter Cwalino has joined Hotel Indigo Dallas Downtown as director of sales.

High-end invitation designer Hannah Handmade, based in Chicago, has rebranded as HH Design and expanded its capabilities to include custom cocktail napkins and table linens.

Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, headquartered in San Francisco, has named Todd Ryan regional director of sales and marketing leading the 16 Kimpton properties in the mid-Atlantic.

Orlando, Fla.-based Associated Luxury Hotels International has expanded its global sales team in the U.S. Midwest with the addition of Michelle Russell as global sales manager, who will assist meeting professionals, association executives, incentive specialists and business executives across the United States who are interested in conducting meetings, conventions and incentive programs at any of ALHI’s member hotels and resorts.
