Current Events: Backline Boosts Fastlane's Production Capabilities

Named one of Colorado's 25 fastest-growing small businesses by the Denver Business Journal in 2000, Denver-based technical production company Fastlane Productions has continued its expansion with the acquisition of Black Canyon Entertainment. Fastlane purchased the Lakewood, Colo.-based company for under $200,000, according to Fastlane owner Doug Lane.

Fastlane general manager Dawnette Newman said her company's purchase of the musical instrument rental, or “backline,” provider will “further add to Fastlane's ability to be a full-service, turnkey production company.”

The arrangement makes good economic sense, Newman noted. Entertainers flying in to perform at events “can't travel with this big backline gear,” she said. She explained that Fastlane's newly acquired musical equipment “just rides along with our audio and lighting,” instead of requiring separate transportation.

According to Newman, the Black Canyon purchase was initiated by former owner Mike Green, who approached Lane. “He was looking to move on to something else, but he didn't want his company to disappear,” she said. She added that Lane recognized the acquisition would “definitely open more doors to us to be involved with events that have music and bands involved.”
